"Le cronache del tempo parlarono di esecuzione 'inebriante' a proposito di questo Beethoven, momento di passaggio dalla tradizione classica alla rivoluzione romantica, di cui contiene già i segni precisi. Questa duplicità è risolta dal pianista in maniera che è scontato giudicare inimitabile e forse irripetibile, due aggettivi propri per ogni prova di Benedetti Michelangeli, per il suo tocco equilibratissimo che esalta e mai appiattisce la qualità delle sonorità e la mutevole varietà timbrica del discorso beethoveniano. Da sottolineare quindi la sintonia con la chiarezza e profondità della direzione di Giulini."
"The security of the technique is enough to make most other pianists attempting an Olympian view of the concerto seem clumsy; but it doesn't draw attention to itself. Since the depth of his sonority is perfectly matched to the orchestra's, it makes for some especially exciting listening in the finale. Great playing by a great pianist."

"Rinuncia infatti a stravaganze 'personali' o a scelte arbitrarie, ma anche a tener conto di decenni di ricerca storicamente informata, e delle riflessioni sui metronomi beethoveniani. I tempi che stacca sono moderati, e una giudiziosa moderazione sembra caratterizzare tutte le scelte di Nelsons: l’equilibrio può essere un pregio, ma il rischio è l’anonimato. Ci si domanda se il Beethoven che ascoltiamo sia diretto da Nelsons o non sia semplicemente quello dei Wiener Philharmoniker guidati da un rinunciatario coordinatore. Non c’è nulla di scandaloso o di scorretto, anzi, tutto funziona bene, a un buon livello professionale, e i Wiener ovviamente suonano da par loro; ma sfugge la ragion d’essere della nuova registrazione. Nella prospettiva di una chiave di lettura 'classica' tutto sembra in ordine; ma solo nel senso di una tranquilla, non problematica efficienza. Nulla da dire anche per la onesta prestazione dei quattro solisti della Nona, Camilla Nylund, Gerhild Romberger, Klaus Florian Vogt, Georg Zeppenfeld."
"Nelsons is patient and exploratory in the first and third movements, making the most of the music’s extraordinary variety of weight, texture and emotional temperature (try at 13'48" in the first and at 12'45" in the third), and the natural gait he finds for the Molto vivace gives it a sense of galloping inevitability. The finale begins promisingly. I very much like how the first appearance of the great D major theme sounds like it’s hummed by the cellos and double basses (Nelsons turning Beethoven’s piano marking into a pianississimo). But the vocal quartet has a woolly start and the tenor’s choppy, rushed phrasing nearly spoils the alla marcia. Nelsons pulls it together after that, however, and the remaining sections gather considerable strength."
"As for the choral finale, kudos to the highly disciplined Wiener Singverein, while the tenor Klaus Florian Vogt brings a unique freshness to the score. My only real complaint here is that some important instrumental detail gets lost in in the louder choral outbursts. If you want your finale to be more dramatic than cathartic, then this might not be your cup of tea. When the fugue parts arrive though, they are impressively clear and defined. (...) As for the recorded sound, it is excellent with plenty of bloom and presence, but not perfect. Hints of stage noise are present at the beginning of some movements (barely audible though), while the antiphonal effects could have been emphasized more."
